The Watch Dogs franchise is one that has divided many Ubisoft fans
over the years. It is a franchise that has struggled to find its
identity with the original going for a grittier tone while the sequel
decided to lighten things up with a less serious plot and protagonist.
Watch Dogs: Legion tries to find middle ground and straddles the line
between being more realistic and the game抯 crazier over-the-top
moments.
While that抯 a cool idea in concept it抯 harder to
execute. It抯 something I抦 confident Ubisoft knew about when it decided
to make that the core design pillar of the game. Having a huge
advancement in procedural generation as your premise means sacrificing
some aspect of the game抯 presentation be it narrative or structural.
Ihe main question is whether that trade -ff was worth it and as
impressive a feat as it is Ubi抯 innovation is not enough to carry the
weight of an entire game.
In terms of how this plays out Legion抯
story is pretty safe offering little surprises or deviation from your
classic Ubisoft storyline. Certain subplots such as the Skye Larsen
missions have more substance to their narrative and Clan Kelley抯
twisted slave auctions are good enough incentives for you to continue
onwards but there抯 not much else that really surprised me throughout
the storyline.
Instead of taking control of a single protagonist
the game tasks players with starting from scratch and recruiting a bunch
of new members to join Dedsec.
Unlike most games the NPCs in
Watch Dogs: Legion aren抰 just there to hand out quests. In the world of
Watch Dogs: Legion each character comes with their own set of skills
and abilities and can potentially be recruited to join your cause. Of
course these characters range from the very useful being able to summon a
construction drone or being extra sneaky to the more mundane such as
having a gambling problem or compulsively buying clothes.
In
terms of actual gameplay Watch Dogs: Legion also reeks of the same
Ubisoft formula you抳e come to either adore or loath: a massive
open-world filled with things to collect bases to stealth into and
people to shoot so that you can eventually liberate the various
districts of London. You抣l be doing the same rote missions over and
over and to hit the 100% completion marker which you抣l either find
cathartic or if you抮e like me painfully boring.
Despite the
issues it抯 hard not to be impressed by Watch Dogs: Legions. Any game
that includes Three Lions in its soundtrack which I discovered when
walking past a pub in Camden gets a free pass from me. Since Ubisoft抯
most recent scandal confirmed Ubisoft抯 commitment to these generic
open-world games that rarely diverge from the current gaming trends it抯
refreshing to see the company offering truly unique gameplay elements
for once.
